Don Vickers, a resident of Georgia, Vermont, joined the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation in 1971, when the organization was in its infancy. Long before VSAC became an education lender and grew substantially in size and scope, Don worked in the organization’s grant and outreach programs. He later became assistant executive director and ascended to his current position, president and CEO, in 1990. In choosing him for this role, VSAC’s board of directors cited Don’s unbridled commitment to helping students achieve their career and education goals. Don is active in a number of local and national higher education organizations, including the Vermont Higher Education Council, Vermont Commission on Higher Education Funding, Education Finance Council, National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, and National Student Clearinghouse. He is also a member of the Vermont Business Roundtable, Vermont Human Rights Commission, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce, Ellsworth Trust, the Fund for Johnson State College, and several boards in his hometown. He is a past member of the federal Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance, which advises Congress on federal student aid programs. He is a past member and chair of the Essex Town School Board and Stern Center for Language and Learning board. Don has received numerous awards for his dedication to students and families. Among them are the New England Educational Opportunity Association’s Marian Belgrave-Howard Award and the Johnson State College Distinguished Alumni Award. Don holds an associate’s degree from Hudson Valley Community College in New York, a bachelor’s degree from Johnson State College, and an honorary doctorate from the College of Saint Joseph for his commitment to postsecondary access.
